We added our 4th element to the Daily 5 today: Read to Someone.
Students can choose to read with a buddy as part of their Daily 5 literacy stations. We discussed 4 new ways that buddies can read together. You may want to try these at home! 1) I Read, You Read
One buddy reads a page, the other buddy retells After each page or two, stop to discuss. Share your thinking about what is happening and what might happen next! If you are reading nonfiction, share what you have learned and what questions you have about the topic. Thank you once again for your generous donations! It feels like our birthdays when these much needed materials arrive in the mail. : )

Ms. Forbes and Mrs. Adams Today our young authors met with writing partners to "Brainstorm Out Loud." Even our favorite published authors get stuck every now and then and can't figure out where to begin. This is where a writing partner can help!
After selecting a topic from their heart map or memory map, writing partners got together and took turns asking each other the following questions to Brainstorm Out Loud: 1) What is your topic? Tell me about it! 2) When did it happen? 3) Who were you with? 4) How did you feel? 5) What happened first, next, last? 6) How did it end? These are great questions you can use at home to be your child's writing partner. Have your child start a writing journal and practice writing at home! Looking for something to do with the family over the weekend? The New York Botanical Garden currently has an exhibition that Willoughby will be interested in! We read the picture book Katie Meets the Impressionists, a magical story of a little girl who, while visiting an art museum with her grandmother, journeys inside the paintings of several French Impressionist masters. One painter Katie admires is Claude Monet. The New York Botanical Garden is currently showcasing a seasonally changing interpretation of the garden that inspired Monet's art. In addition, two rarely seen paintings by the artist will be on view, and films, concerts, poetry readings, and hands-on art for kids will provide rich insight into the life and work of this renowned master. The exhibit runs until October 21st.

Thursday, October 11th, 6:00 - 6:30 p.m. in Room 315. Mrs. Adams and Ms. Forbes will present a year-long overview of units of study and a daily snapshot of each workshop. In addition, there will be a question and answer session at the end of the presentation. We hope to see you there! You are invited to our first Gallery Walk on Friday, October 5th at 9:00 a.m. in our classroom. As you know, Willoughby artists have been working hard on their Romare Bearden-inspired self-portraits. They have each written an artist statement to hang alongside their collage to provide insight about the colors and symbols they chose for their work. We hope you can join us!

Brooklyn Bridge Park Wednesday, October 31 9:00-12:30 Willoughby will be visiting Brooklyn Bridge Park on Wednesday, October 31 from 9:00-12:30. Brooklyn Bridge Park was a grassroots initiative that brought together people in the community to transform an abondoned waterfront into the park you see today. At the end of October students will begin a geometry unit studying plane and solid shapes, and the park at Pier 6 is a wonderful place to find these shapes in a real world setting. In addition to sketching the park and the shapes they see, they will tour the offices of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy. While there, they will get to see the actual blue prints and models that became the park. This will lead into their next Social Studies project that will focus on designing a community park by creating blueprints and building models using geometric shapes. CHAPERONES WELCOME! PERMISSION SLIPS WILL BE COMING HOME IN THE NEXT 2 WEEKS, PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN JOINING US! |
