Here's our process:
1. Write a subtraction sentence. Pick a whole number from 10-20. (Remember that in subtraction sentences, Whole - Part = Part) Pick a smaller number (one part) to take away.
2. Say your subtraction story out loud and draw a picture to show your whole number. Cross off the amount you are taking away. Count how many are left and record your answer (the difference) at the end of your subtraction sentence. ALWAYS CHECK YOUR WORK by using a another strategy, such as Clap and Count Back.
3. Write your story! Remember to always end with, "How many are left?"
You could also start a partner journal where you and your child each write subtraction stories and solve each others! Don't forget to check your partner's work using Clap and Count Back. : )
Feel free to bring in your math journal to share with us during Morning Meeting!
