We have moved on to a new math unit - Measurement! However, it is important that our mathematicians practice their addition and subtraction fluency with numbers 1-10. A great game that Willoughby students have been playing in math stations to practice fluency is Pop for Addition and Subtraction. Students have been using a new strategy called Clap & Count On and Clap & Count Back.
Here's how it works:
ADDITION Clap & Count On - Students identify the greater number of the parts in the addition problem and clap while saying that number out loud. Then, they count on on their fingers to add the part that is less to find the whole number. For example, in the addition problem 8 + 2, students clap and say, "8!" then count on their fingers, "9, 10!" and say the complete addition sentence, "8+2=10." Remember that in addition Part + Part = Whole.
SUBTRACTION Clap & Count Back - Students identify the whole number and clap while saying the whole number. Then, they begin to count back, holding up the number of fingers that corresponds with the known part to find the unknown part. For example, in the subtraction problem 10-4, students clap and say, "10!" then count back by holding up 4 fingers, one at a time, "9, 8, 7, 6!" and say the subtraction sentence, "10-4=6!" Remember that in subtraction Whole - Part = Part and the Whole number is at the beginning of the subtraction sentence.
