Today students began a study of Romare Bearden's "The Block" - a tribute to Harlem, the neighborhood that nurtured his life and work. They made close observations of the unique shapes and details of the collage, as well as the window scene "look-ins."
As we explore our community outside of school, artists will collaborate to create their own version of "The Block" based on our neighborhood of Ft. Greene, Brooklyn. Students will play around with shapes to create images of our neighborhood - real and imagined (just like Bearden!) - for the large scale collage piece. They will include "look-ins" by creating a story that lies beyond the windows, and describe the scene in a writing component.
As you walk around the neighborhood, encourage your child to look for inspiration for their art and to take note of the unique people, places, spaces, and objects that make up Ft. Greene, as well as the real-world shapes that are all around us.
