In this unit Willoughby will be learning how to count, read, and write numbers to 20.
Students will focus on recognizing numbers 11 to 20 as 1 group of ten plus a particular number of ones, as an introduction to the concept of Place Value.
This is a key step in setting the foundation for grasping the idea of tens and ones, and being able to make sense of two-digit numbers. Children need to be confident in their understanding of place value, and seeing two-digit numbers as groups of tens and ones, before moving on to the operations of subtraction and addition.
We will also apply this knowledge of two-digit numbers to compare numbers and build number relationships. Students will compare more than one number, using the vocabulary greatest and least, and order a set of numbers accordingly. Students will also learn to make and recognize increasing and decreasing number patterns with a difference of 1 or 2 between consecutive steps in a pattern.
Students will use flexible thinking and strategies when problem solving with numbers to 20.
We will be building on previous strategies (such as using ten frames, Clap on Count On), as well as adding new strategies to their Math Strategy Tool Box.
