DEMOCRACY IN ACTION
Students are hard at work building our classroom community. After identifying and sharing our hopes and dreams for 1st grade, the team created, published, and signed our class rules!
- Through role plays, read alouds, and collaborative group work, we are learning how to work together and support one another so that everyone can grow to our best creative abilities and realize our dreams.
ROMARE BEARDEN SELF-PORTRAITS
Willoughby is learning all about Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden. As we learn about our diverse classroom community, students are creating self-portrait collages in Bearden's style. And just like Bearden, our young artists are exploring their creative selves while listening to jazz music for inspiration! More details to come about our first gallery walk - you will be invited!

MINING OUR HEARTS
Writers began to "mine their hearts" for ideas and created a "Heart Map" in their journals. We searched our hearts for people, places, and things we love and created lists of possible topics to explore in our writing.
Here is one example of how a Heart Map topic becomes inspiration for writing.
MEMORY MAPS
Writers also brainstormed topics for writing by creating Memory Maps filled with life experiences.
