On January 31st Daniel Salmieri will be visiting Willoughby.
Daniel is a children's book illustrator (born, bred, and based in Brooklyn!) whose credits include Dragons Love Tacos and the Those Darn Squirrels series, and we feel so lucky that he is visiting us! We will have the great pleasure of Daniel reading one of his books to us, and afterward he will play an illustrating game with the class, and answer questions about the illustration and publishing process. We are SO excited! Today we will be sending home an order form so that you can order one of Daniel's books before his visit. If you choose to order books, Daniel will bring them along and personally inscribe them for your child during his visit. Return the order form by Friday, 1/18/13 with cash or check made out to Daniel Salmieri in a sealed envelope. Very important- please be sure to write your child’s name on both the envelope and order form! Here's a fun, quick and easy way to play and practice sight words, (letters, numbers, etc.). All you need is Connect Four and some dollar store dot stickers!
Set Up: Write your sight words onto the stickers and stick them in the center of the playing pieces (on one side only!). How to Play: Play Connect Four as you normally would (trying to get 4 of your color in a row) with this sight word twist- Turn the pieces with the sight word stickers facing DOWN. Before each turn the child picks up one of the playing pieces (with the sight word stickers face down) and reads the sight word correctly before putting the piece into play on the game board. In order to play a piece, the player must first read a word correctly. If the child can't read the sight word, tell them what the word is and have them return it face down and pick a new piece. Mix up the words by using words they've already mastered, words they are working on, and even a few new words for challenge and variety. This will give the game a nice blend of challenge and ease to keep interest going. (And you don't have to re-do the stickers each time you play!) -Adapted from momto2poshlildivas.com In this unit Willoughby will be learning how to count, read, and write numbers to 20.
Students will focus on recognizing numbers 11 to 20 as 1 group of ten plus a particular number of ones, as an introduction to the concept of Place Value. This is a key step in setting the foundation for grasping the idea of tens and ones, and being able to make sense of two-digit numbers. Children need to be confident in their understanding of place value, and seeing two-digit numbers as groups of tens and ones, before moving on to the operations of subtraction and addition. We will also apply this knowledge of two-digit numbers to compare numbers and build number relationships. Students will compare more than one number, using the vocabulary greatest and least, and order a set of numbers accordingly. Students will also learn to make and recognize increasing and decreasing number patterns with a difference of 1 or 2 between consecutive steps in a pattern. Students will use flexible thinking and strategies when problem solving with numbers to 20. We will be building on previous strategies (such as using ten frames, Clap on Count On), as well as adding new strategies to their Math Strategy Tool Box. -Adapted from Math in Focus Happy New Year, Willoughby! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable break. Thank you again for the generous and lovely holiday gifts. Your children bring smiles to our faces each day and we are looking forward to a new year filled with exciting learning opportunities and new adventures.
Here's to a great 2013! |
